SWANSEA Lib Dems have welcomed their party's new deputy leader.
Simon Hughes MP has taken over the role from Vince Cable, who has decided to concentrate on his cabinet duties as Business Secretary.
Swansea West Parliamentary spokesman and Uplands councillor Peter May said Mr Hughes was a popular choice.
"He has visited us many times to help with campaigns over the years," Mr May said.
"He is a great choice to succeed Vince Cable. He has been a major figure in the party and has been an MP for nearly 30 years."
Mr Hughes, who is the MP for Southwark and Bermondsey, said he was honoured to take on the role.
He added: "It is an honour for me to follow Vince Cable as the new deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats. This is not a responsibility I will ever take lightly.
"I will fight every day for the principles which underpin our party: fairness, freedom, openness, equality, stewardship of our environment and standing up for those who cannot stand up for themselves."
